After a year hiatus from the ring the former WBO heavyweight title holder Sergei Liakhovich 23-2 (14) is set to return to the square Januray 19th to face the once beaten 7’ giant Nikolay Valuev 47-1 (34), a fight that the “White Wolf” strongly demands will be a great fight.
Liakhovich, who had tallied up wins over Friday Ahunanya (UD 12), Dominick Guinn (UD 10), and the fight of the year candidate against Lamon Brewster where he earned the WBO strap unanimously December of 2004, stepped in against the hard-hitting Shannon Briggs a year ago this month. After leading on all scorecards and with just
seconds left in what would have been a successful defense of his strap, Sergei was caught and dropped by a spirited last effort attempt from Briggs, giving Liakhovich the second loss of his career with just one second left in the match.
After the bout it was reported that Liakhovich had went into the fight with injuries, and now after time to heal the Belarus boxer is ready to get back to business and has his sights set on the former WBA heavyweight titleholder Valuev. Read on to see what Liakhovich had to say on his upcoming fight and much more, enjoy.
Benny Henderson Jr.: Give the readers your thoughts on your upcoming bout against Nikolay Valuev?
Sergei Liakhovich: It will be a good fight; actually it will be a great fight. I will expect a great fight, I expect the best from Valuev and this will be a great fight.
BH: You have had a year lay off from the ring, do you feel this is the best fight for you, what about a tune up or something?
SL: You know what, actually I am ok. For this whole year every time I was in the gym I would train so I have no problem right now going into the ring and fighting this kind of fight.
BH: With this fight this will probably a question you will be asked repeatedly, but what about the size difference?
SL: It just depends how you use it, I will use his advantage against him, just depends on how he uses it.
BH: John Ruiz has been on the warpath publicly calling you out, trying to get you dropped from your ranking and so on, what are your thoughts on that situation?
SL: You know what, John Ruiz is screaming like a girl I am telling you. First of all I don’t understand it, if he has some kind of problem with me. I think he is just crazy; he called me with all this bull, but forget about him. I don’t need John Ruiz, why do I need him for? Nobody wants to fight John Ruiz, nobody wants to see John Ruiz, people will pay to not see this guy. (Laughs) So why do I need to take a fight with this guy? If I had a good reason to take this fight, I will fight him but right now he needs me more than I need him.
BH: If you could send out a message to Valuev regarding this fight, what exactly would you say?
SL: He is a good fighter, all I can say is be prepared and be ready.
BH: Anything in closing?
SL: Thanks to God, to all my family and my wife and to everybody who have supported me, thank you to all my fans. This is a great opportunity for me to get back in the ring and fight this kind of fight, thanks to everybody.
I would like to thank Sergei Liakhovich for his time and thoughts.
