Benny Henderson Jr.
Cherry, coming up December 8th once again you will be taking on Wes Ferguson, a guy who you defeated unanimously this past summer, your thoughts on the rematch.
Edner Cherry
I just want to give honor to God, God opens the door and no man can shut the door and God opens a door that no man could open. God has made this happen. I am ready for Ferguson physically, mentally and I am getting prepared for this fight again. It will be an exciting fight come December 8th.
BH
Once again you defeated Ferguson unanimously the first time around, do you see it playing out any differently in the rematch?
EC
I think he might come with something different to probably keep me on the outside and box me; he may try to win by points. At the same time I am going to keep the same pressure and try to add some more pressure and stay busy. That is about it.
BH
You’ll be on the under card of the Hatton vs. Mayweather showdown, any pressure to perform well with this kind of spotlight?
EC
Oh yeah, there will be a lot of people that will be watching, it is good to fight well and look great on HBO PPV, they may call you back to come on the show.
BH
Opening up 2007, you lost to unanimous decision to Paulie Malignaggi, did you take anything constructive away from that fight that could possibly help you in the future?
EC
Oh yeah, I learned a whole lot from the Malignaggi. I think my mistake was that I did not put enough pressure on Paulie, I was waiting and that is one thing a fighter cannot do, that was a problem for me. After that I fought Ferguson I needed to put pressure and stay busy so I learned a lot from that fight.
BH
In your experience as a professional boxer, what has been the hardest aspect of being a pro fighter?
EC
Dedication with the sport, training hard and staying away from the family, that is the hard past, just being dedicated and giving it your all.
BH
This touch on your faith, how has your faith played a part not only in your everyday life but also in your career?
EC
With my faith I also believe in myself, I never put myself down, if I lose I keep my faith strong and my head up and just continue working hard. I just have a great faith that I don’t want to give up at all. I just continue going, this is part of life, never give it up until you reach that goal.
BH
What can the fight fans expect from the “Cherry Bomb” come fight night?
EC
The plan is Edner Cherry is going to handle his business and stay busy, if the knock out comes than I will be happy; I am going to handle my business and give a good show.
BH
Your prediction on the Mayweather vs. Hatton bout?
EC
Floyd will win that fight with the speed, Floyd has all the tools and he knows how to adjust to every fighter. If it has to be a boring fight and he has to find a way to win that fight he will do it, I see Floyd coming out with the victory and I think it is going to be a great fight.
BH
Anything you would like to address anything to Ferguson, the division or your fans?
EC
I just want to thank my fans all over; I want to thank them for their support for being there for me and believing in me as a boxer. I love them. My fans made me who I am now right now, and I thank them, that is why I am here right now.
I would like to thank Bob Carroll for setting up this interview, and a thanks goes out to Edner Cherry for sharing his time and thoughts.
