Joel Diaz Jr.
Tonight at Ballys Park Place Hotel & Casino, the undefeated super featherweight contender Joel Diaz Jr. 10-0 (9) will aim to keep his record intact as he takes on the battle tested Puerto Rican born boxer Guillermo Sanchez 13-6-1 (5), in what will be Diaz’s second scheduled ten round bout. The twenty-year old knock out artist has devoured all that has crossed his path, stopping all but one via knock out, half of his victories have come in the opening round. In this exclusive interview, Doghouse Boxing gets the thoughts of the young gun on his upcoming match-up, bright future and more, enjoy.

Benny Henderson Jr.: The last time we spoke you were preparing for your first ten rounder, but it only took you five rounds to dispose of fight veteran Emmanuel Lucero. All though he has ten losses on his record, prior to your bout, he has fights against top notch opposition, most notably, Manny Pacquiao. Your thoughts on that victory, and what it says about Joel Diaz Jr.

Listen to internet radio with Fightin Words Radio on Blog Talk Radio
Joel Diaz Jr.: I gained a lot of experience when I fought Lucero in my last fight. He was tough and came with a lot of pressure. I used my length and reach to control distance and I kept him at bay with my jab. No doubt, fighting a guy like Lucero was a step up for me. I did what I had to do and came out with the victory.

BH: You are now slated to take on Guillermo Sanchez, who all though has six defeats on his resume, they came against guys such as Adrian Broner, and the likes of Edner Cherry, who Sanchez had down in round one. What are your thoughts coming into this bout?

JD:
Sanchez will be the first southpaw that I will fight in the ring. I’ve been getting a lot of good sparring and these are the type of fights that will get me ready for other southpaws that I will face in the future. My trainer Able Sanchez has got me boxing more, so I’m going to use everything we’ve been working on in this fight.

BH: What type of fight are your expecting out of Sanchez?

JD:
I expect to see the best Sanchez that is out there. He’s looking to knock me off my unbeaten streak so I know he’s coming to fight. I’ll be ready for anything he brings to the table.

BH: Sanchez has taken twelve of his opponents the distance, six times he went eight rounds, and once a ten rounder. You yourself have been over five rounds only twice in your career. You have been known for your knock out power, do you see another knock out coming, and if Sanchez does take your power, do you feel you can go a solid ten rounds to take a decision?

JD:
I’ve been training in Big bear for my last few fights so I know I have what it takes to go the distance if need be. My goal is to box and let the chips fall where they may. I never go into a fight looking for the knockout, but if I get my opponent hurt, then I’m going for the kill.

BH: If all goes well, this will be your fifth victory of 2012, what are your expectations for 2013?

JD:
I definitely want to get a few more fights before the end of the year. Boxing 360 and Mario Yagobi is my promoter and he’s been doing a great job keeping me busy. I feel my career is right on track and I can see myself fighting on TV soon.

BH: You have progressed well in such a short time, looking at your style we know your strengths, but where do you feel you may need improvement on as a young prospect?

JD:
My trainer has me boxing more and using my jab and length. I’m working hard on boxing more.

BH: Any message you would like to send out to Sanchez?

JD:
I respect all fighters including Sanchez, but he’s in my way of accomplishing my goal of becoming a world champion. I coming to win this fight and show the fans in Atlantic City what I’m all about.

BH: Anything in closing?

JD:
Just want to thank my fans and my promoter Boxing 360 for being by my side. I’m always going to give it all in all of my fights. Thanks for the support everyone.
