San Francisco native and undefeated welterweight Karim Mayfield (13-0, 8 KOs ) returns to the ring February 18 as part of a dynamic night of professional boxing. The card entitled “The War at the Warf”- San Francisco Boxing Returns, also features Mercito "No Mercy" Gesta (20-0, 8 KOs), Eloy “The Prince” Perez (19-0, 5 KOs ) and Joe “The Punisher” Gamina. Some are calling Gesta the next Manny Pacquiao, while Perez puts his spotless record on the line against tough Roger Gonzales (27-3, 18 KOs ).
Mayfield had been scheduled to fight last November until his opponent pulled out twenty-four hours before their fight. The cancellation was a big letdown for the “Hard Hitta”, who was primed and ready to go.
“It was very disappointing,” replied Mayfield quietly. “Plus all the hard work, not to mention no pay day”
Mayfield had been in Las Vegas training with the celebrated Floyd Mayweather Sr. for a number of months. The experience has been very positive and educational for Karim.
“Training with Floyd is a great…I definitely learned some things”
Shaking off the disappointment of the November 27 cancelation, Karim returned to the gym and kept himself ready, waiting for his next opportunity. When he was offered a fight on February 18, he jumped at the chance. His goals for 2011 are already set.
“My goals are to first win the NABF title from the guy Michael Dallas lost to (Josesito Lopez) then go after Lamont Peterson. I’m looking for the best fights...I’d like to fight every month”
Mayfield has been a fighter that others have avoided. He’s fought five undefeated fighters in his career and beaten them all. Francisco Santana entered his match with Mayfield with a record of 11-0. Most experts expected Santana to prevail, Mayfield had other had other idea’s stopping Santana in five. He last fought in front of his hometown crowd last June, destroying Sergio Joel De La Torre.
