By John J. Raspanti, Doghouse Boxing:
Undefeated former world lightweight champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios,
who lost his championship on the scale last year, will get a chance to
regain the WBO version of the title this Saturday night (April 14) when he faces
unknown Richard Abril at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Abril
(17-2, 8 KOs ) talked himself into the fight last month by slapping
Rios during a press conference that he (Abril) happened to crash. Rios
(29-0-1, 22 KOs ) was there to talk about-facing highly ranked Yuriorkis
Gamboa in what to many was a dream fight. Gamboa though had other
ideas. He rejected the deal his promoter Top Rank offered and said see
ya. This writer refuses to criticize Gamboa’s decision without further
information.
Abril challenged Rios to a fight and as mentioned,
slapped him. Rios, who loves to fight, wants to hurt Abril for his lack
of respect. That slap could be something Abril regrets.
“He's
going to go down and go down real hard,” said the hard-hitting Rios. “In
the boxing world Abril is in the darkness and I plan to keep him there.
I haven't forgotten what he did to me in Miami . He's going to pay
big-time for that."
The night of championship boxing also
features Mexican icon Juan Manuel Marquez (53-6-1, 39 KOs) facing Sergey
Fedchenko (30-1, 13 KOs) of Kharkov , Ukraine for the vacant WBO
interim 140-pound world title.
Mike Alvarado (32-0, 23 KOs) and Mark Jones (24-0-1, 12 KOs ) will also be fighting.
All fights can be seen live on HBO Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
