By John J. Raspanti, Doghouse Boxing:
On May 5 in Las Vegas, Floyd "Money" Mayweather and Miguel Cotto will
not only be vying for Cotto's welterweight title, but the WBC diamond
belt, as well. Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya announced the added
hardware yesterday.
“The WBC belt has always been respected by
boxers as one of the most prestigious title they can win, and to have
the Diamond belt up for grabs in the main event adds even more to this
great night,” said De La Hoya. “When this fight is over, there will
absolutely be no doubt as to who is the best 154-pounder in the world.”
Added
WBC President Jose Sulaiman, who was quoted on boxingscene.com: "These
elite boxers will fight for the diamond title. The promoters asked us
for permission to [have them] fight for this belt and the answer is yes,
because it makes the fight even more special."
The co-feature of
the night is a battle of today versus yesterday as 21-year-old star
Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez takes on 40-year-old Shane Mosley in a 12-round
affair. Alvarez's WBC super welterweight belt will be on the line.
Former Alvarez victim Alfonso Gomez and rising star Jessie Vargas will meet in a 10-round welterweight fight.
