Carlos Quintana
By John J. Raspanti, Doghouse Boxing: In a battle of southpaw’s Carlos Quintana (29-3, 22 KOs) stopped DeAndre Larimore (23-3, 17 KOs) in something of an upset at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.  The bout was part of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto undercard.

Latimore, 26, came out aggressively in rounds one and two. His power was evident, as was his speed. Quintana used the ring to size up his younger opponent. In round three he began open up. His combinations weren’t powerful, but kept finding Latimore’s chin. Quintana kept using angles and finding a home for his left hand. Rounds four and five found Quintana even more aggressive.

Latimore looked befuddled in round five and completely outclassed in round six. The 35-year-old Quintana backed Latimore into the ropes and unloaded a combination that staggered his younger opponent. Quintana’s final left knocked Latimore down. The Missouri native struggled to get up but couldn’t make it.

Time was 2:19 seconds of round six. Quintana landed 108 punches to 55 for Latimore.

Jessie Vargas (19-0, 9 KOs) used his strong left and occasional right hand to win a unanimous decision over Steve Forbes (35-11, 11 KOs) in the second televised fight at the MGM Grand Arena. The bout resembled a sparring session at times with Vargas maintaining an edge throughout. The scores were 100-90, 97-93 and 98-92.
