By John J. Raspanti, Doghouse Boxing: On Saturday night, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez retained his
portion of the super middleweight crown by stopping Alfonzo Gomez in the
sixth round at the Stapes Center in Los Angeles, California.
The Mexican sensation seemed to lose focus after the
first round when he knocked Gomez down with jab. Gomez was up quickly
and appeared unhurt.
The round had started slowly with both fighters jabbing.
Alvarez landed a right hand near the middle of the round while Gomez
countered with a body shot. Alvarez then worked on his defense as Gomez
began to outhustle him.
After the knockdown, Alvarez (38-0, 28 KOs) took some of
the fight off. He likely figured he could knock out Gomez anytime he
felt like it. In the second round Gomez (23-5, 12 KOs), began to work
himself back into the fray. He jabbed to the body and the head as
Alvarez laid back and fired an occasional combination.
Gomez had his best round in the third when he connected
with a four stinging, if not powerful, right hands. Alvarez channeled
Floyd Mayweather by tucking his chin behind his shoulder and shifting
his head. He moved off the ropes and jabbed but clearly Gomez had worked
his way back into the fight.
The former Contender star continued boxing very cleverly
in rounds four and five. Alvarez, was allowing himself to be outhustled,
but his face showed little if any concern. Five rounds into the fight,
it was Gomez who was leading on all three of the judges scorecards.
Gomez was again the aggressor in round six as Alvarez
looked to counter. Near the midway point, Alvarez unleashed a wicked
three punch combination that stopped Gomez in his tracks. A few seconds
later he landed a brutal uppercut followed by a big right hand. Gomez
stumbled back as Alvarez pursued intent now, on ending Gomez’s quest for
an upset. Alvarez landed another right as Gomez languished on the ropes
trying to cover up. Alvarez kept up the onslaught until the referee
jumped in and stopped the contest at 2:38 seconds of the sixth round.
“I wasn’t unfocused (during the early rounds), I was
confident because of the fans,” Alvarez said after the fight. “I did my
job in the beginning. I hit him hard in the first round, but I knew it
was only a matter of time before I ended the fight.”
Gomez felt the referee stopped the fight to early.
“He’s a great puncher, but I felt like the referee was looking for a reason to stop the fight,” said Gomez.
Alvarez is tentatively scheduled to return to the ring in December.
Hopefully he learned that his fans have no interest in watching the second coming of Floyd Mayweather .
