Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) captured the vacant WBC middleweight title by winning a unanimous 12 round decision over former champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Saturday night. Alvarez is the first fighter from Mexico to win a middleweight belt.

Scores were 117-111, 119-109 and 118-110 for Alvarez.

Maxboxing and Doghouseboxing had Alvarez winning by a 116-112 tally.

As expected, Cotto, boxed pretty well in opening rounds. He moved side to side and popped his jab. Alvarez, the former WBC and WBA junior middleweight champion, stalked Cotto. After missing a number of huge hooks, he went to the body. Cotto landed a good right in round two, but the slightly taller Alvarez absorbed the blow without incident. He fired back with a counter right that knocked Cotto back a step. A straight right also clipped Cotto.

Alvarez opened up a little more in round three. His punches were sharp and quick. Cotto, 35, the older man by ten years, continued to bounce and jab. His footwork was sound, but this is boxing not dancing. Alvarez continued to land the cleaner and harder blows in rounds four and five. A heavy right to the ear, followed by a short uppercut seemed to bother Cotto.

Cotto tried to change the momentum in round six. He connected with a wicked hook to the gut, but the stronger Alvarez soon fought back. An overhand right found Cotto’s chin. Alvarez dug a number of hooks to Cotto’s belly in round seven. Cotto landed a stinging jab, but Alvarez found pay dirt with another right hand.

Like an old gunfighter who had decided it was time to make a stand, Cotto stood his ground in round eight and rumbled with Alvarez. Both fighters connected with hard blows to the head. Cotto landed his best left hook of the night, but within seconds, Alvarez was strafing him with a combination.

Cotto was searching for answers in round nine. He went back to boxing, but Alvarez was reaching him with heavy shots. Alvarez let fly with a number of combinations in rounds 10 and 11. Cotto fought back with hooks and jabs. Alvarez jolted him with an inside blow.

Alvarez came out firing in round 12. He landed left hooks to body and head. Cotto connected with his own combination, but again, Alvarez just looked at him. Alvarez stunned Cotto with an uppercut and right hand at the bell.

“I’m very happy, “ said a smiling Alvarez in the ring. “Much respect to Miguel Cotto. I’ll always admire him.”
