In
a battle of undefeated fighters, Javier Fortuna (22-0, 15 KOs)
outworked Patrick Hyland (27-1, 12 KOs) over 12-rounds to win a
unanimous decision at the MGM Grand, Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas,
Nevada on Saturday night. Sadly, the bout was more a snoozer than a sparkler.
In
round one, both fighters did more staring than punching. Furtuna, a
southpaw, tried to time the taller Hyland with combinations.
Fortuna,
23, opened up some more in round two. Hyland kept working behind his
jab. His right hand connected to the side of Furtuna's face. The
impatient Las Vegas crowd was booing at the end of the round.
Fortuna
dropped his hands in round three. He was quicker, and his left was
starting to land. Hyland wasn’t throwing enough punches. Fortuna landed a
hard right to the body. Hyland countered with a left right combination
at the end of the round. Fortuna continued to control the fight in round
four. His movement and speed were too much for Hyland. In this writers
opinion he had easily swept the first three rounds.
Hyland
clipped his opponent with a lead right. Fortuna landed a hard right at
the bell and another punch after the bell had sounded. Hyland wasn’t
happy.
Fortuna began to impersonate Sergio Martinez (but without
the drama) in round five. He moved in and out, peppering Hyland with
punches - all the while keeping his arms at hip level. Hyland, 29,
needed to punch more. Fortuna kept moving and jabbing.
In round
seven, Hyland tried to force the action. His right was beginning to find
Fortuna. Hyland landed a hard combination to the body of Fortuna.
Hyland was definitely coming on.
Fortuna was noticeably slower
in round eight. He was still able to connect with combinations. Hyland
cuffed him with two left hands. Both fighters landed hooks near the
ropes.
Hyland’s corner told him to pick it up in round nine.
Fortuna hit the canvas, but not from any punches. Hyland threw Fortuna
down on his side, and a few seconds later Fortuna went down from a low
blow. Fortuna had found his second wind by the 10th round. He
was back to moving and punching. Hyland connected with a good right to
the body. Later in the round, a three combination by Hyland also found
pay dirt.
In round 11, Hyland ran into two hard lefts. Fortuna
boxed like he had a comfortable lead on the scorecards. Hyland stalked,
but his success was limited. The 12th and final round lacked
drama. Hyland needed a knockout, but couldn’t connect solidly. Fortuna
staggered Hyland with a flurry of punches.
All three judges had Fortuna winning by scores of 118-110, 116-112 and 115-113.
Doghouseboxing scored the bout 117-111 for Fortuna .
