Thursday was the beginning of the sweet sixteen in the NCAA March Madness tournament. In keeping up with that trend I’m going to try to set up my brackets using the top 16 heavyweight fighters in the world. That may be the hardest part right there in finding 16 heavyweights that deserve to be in the tournament, but I will give it a try.
I’m going to separate it into 4 different brackets, seeding each fighter 1-4, giving you the 16 fighters that will make up the tournament. I’m not going to try and decide who wins each one of these matches, but I will give my final four at the end and I’d be interested to receive emails from the Doghouse readers to see how they think the tournament would pan out. I’m going to separate the different regions of the brackets by the hometown of the number 1 seeded fighter in each bracket. So, first I’ll name the number 1 seeds.
The Number 1 seeds in my bracket would look like this: Chris Byrd, Nikolay Valuev, Wladimir Klitschko and Lamon Brewster. Yes, these are disputable, but then again so is everything in the heavyweight division, right up to this past weekends fight between James Toney and Hasim Rahman. Now I’ll divide the brackets between the regions, with the highest seeded fighter fighting the lowest seeded fighter. It’ll make sense as you go on…hopefully.
The Michigan Bracket, headlined by number 1 seeded Chris Byrd looks like this:
1. Chris Byrd
4. Larry Donald
2. Hasim Rahman
3. Juan Carlos Gomez
I’m guessing a lot of our readers might pick the lower seeded fighter to win each of these fights. But, lets move on to the California Bracket with Lamon Brewster at the man sitting on top.
1. Lamon Brewster
4. Danny Williams
2. James Toney
3. Oleg Maskaev
I think this bracket brings a lot of action with it in the first fight, and a pretty good opposite style type of fight in the second one. With that, lets go to the 3rd region in our brackets, Germany.
1. Wladimir Klitchko
4. Paolo Vidoz
2. Calvin Brock
3. John Ruiz
It’s hard to imagine anyone coming out of the Germany region besides Klitchko, but some of the readers might think other wise. Let’s move on to our 4th and final region, which belongs to Russia.
1. Nicolay Valuev
4. Sultan Ibragimov
2. Samuel Peter
3. Monte Barrett
I like both fights in the region, especially the first one. That is a fight I wouldn’t mind seeing in the near future. But, what do you guys think? My Final Four would probably look something like this.
Chris Byrd
James Toney
Wladimir Klitchko
Nicolay Valuev
No huge upsets here, but then again that’s why my NCAA tournament brackets were thrown in the wastebasket long ago. Who will be your Bradley University or George Mason of my boxing tournament I’ve compiled here. Email me and let me know who you would have added, or dropped, and who you think would win it all at Bramafide@aol.com.
