Mexican’s Carlos Molina 15-4-1 (5), fighting out of Chicago upset Alexis Camacho 17-2 (16) out of Austin, Texas by decision Friday night at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City over 10 rounds in a battle of welterweights on ESPN2.

Camacho who is one of Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing’s top prospects took on more than he must have figured in Molina whose sole reputation is based on a draw with Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (38-0-1), who was 23-0 at the time. After the draw Molina lost 3 in a row starting with a Chavez rematch. Since then he had won 6 straight before Friday nights fight promoted by Star Boxing. Camacho has lost his 2nd fight in the last 3 after winning his first 16 fights.

Molina was much more accurate than the wide punches that Camacho came in with especially to the body of Molina. The scoring was 100-90, 98-92 and 97-93. The shutout judge should go back to the optometrist for further review. It was a hard fought grueling match that left referee Steve Smoger with little to do.

In the 8 round semi-windup Philaldelphia’s “New” Ray Robinson 10-0 (4) at 5:10 must have thought he was looking in the mirror while facing a fellow southpaw who was actually an inch taller in Darnell Jiles, Jr. 8-1-1 (3) of upstate Rochester in this welterweight match. Robinson landed his hook off the jab causing problems for Jiles who was coming off an 11 month lay-off since drawing with another Philly fighter in Hank Lundy who was 10-0 at the time. Jiles only offense was when he rocked Robinson in the 2nd round momentarily which only made Robinson fight that much harder until the bell. In the 3rd round it was all Robinson as he had Jiles covering up against the ropes with head shots. Referee David Fields never warned Jiles about not punching back during this barrage of punches that had Jiles doing little if anything in return. To the surprise of the crowd and the Robinson corner Jiles complained of an injured hand and refused to come out for the 4th round giving Robinson the victory. It was the first 8 rounder for both fighters. Robinson is also a Star Boxing top prospect.

Earlier southpaw Yathomas Riley 6-0 (3) of Panama City, Florida who is also of the Star Boxing group scored 2 knockdowns in the 1st round to win every round on all 3 judges scorecards in a 4 round light heavyweight fight 40-34. The 2008 National Golden Gloves champion Denis Doughlin 1-0 (1) of Morganville, New Jersey made his debut stopping Robert Irrizarry 2-7 of Orlando in the 1st round of a 4 round middleweight match .

In a battle of unbeaten’s Guillermo Sanchez 7-0 (2), of Buffalo defeated Eddie Irizarry 5-1 (2) of the Bronx in a 6 round super featherweight match. Heavyweight Terrell Nelson 9-7 (6) of Plainfield, New Jersey stopped Wes Taylor 7-13-1 (7) from Milledgeville, Georgia in the 2nd round. Bryant Pappas 9-0 (9) of Yonkers remained unbeaten stopping Chris Ray 8-3 (8) of Fort Smith, Arkansas in the 1st round. With both fighters having only won by knockout it was no surprise ending in this 4 round light heavyweight match.
