With all the hype pertaining to Froch
and Johnson for Showtime’s coverage Saturday night it seems the
undercard has all but gone unnoticed. It will be the return to the
US for Zolt “Firebird” Erdei, 32-0 (17), of Fot, Hungary. The
former WBO light heavyweight champion had 11 defenses before
capturing the WBC Cruiserweight title in November of 2009. He was
somewhere between inactive and retired for a year before returning to
the US for the third time starting in 2001 and then 2002. He was put
in with a “sleeper” in Samson Onyango though winning almost every
round. His opponent is former WBA Super Middleweight champion Byron
Mitchell, 27-7-1 (21), of Dothan, AL. Both boxers are 37 and at the
crossroads of their careers. Erdei showed great skills but
inactivity can be his greatest problem.
Also, on the undercard was to feature
Edison Miranda, 33-5 (29) and Allan Green, 29-3 (20), in separate
bouts. While Miranda was awaiting an opponent Green was pulling out
of his fight with Philly’s Dhafir Smith, a recent conqueror of
former champion Jeff Lacy. Smith was offered Miranda but it seems
their camp were looking for something easier so they took Rayco
Saunders, 20-13-2 (8), whom Smith beat in 2009. This left Smith out
in the cold which lately is nothing unusual for him.
When your record is 24-20-7 (4), some
boxer’s feel they are in with a tough but misguided boxer for the
most part who has a jab that will match-up with anyone in the super
middleweight division. He was willing to step up to light
heavyweight which is nothing unusual in order to get a fight but
instead he will be getting fellow Philadelphian Yusaf Mack ready for
his June 25th title bout with Tavoris Cloud’s IBF light
heavyweight title fight in camp in the Pocono Mountains of PA.
There are three prospects on the card
worth looking at. Two are light heavyweights in Sweden’s Badou
Jack, 5-0 (4), now living in Las Vegas, who will step up to his first
6 rounder against Haijro Sujak, 6-1 (2), out of the Bronx, NY.
Another is Ukraine’s Ivan Redkach, 6-0 (5), now out of Los Angeles,
who has fought all his fights in CA, except one in Las Vegas. He
will be matched with Alberto Amaro, 6-5 (2), out of Puerto Rico who
has fought all unbeaten boxers in his last three fights. In his last
match he defeated Alberto Cruz, 6-0, though that was back in October
of 2009.
In the lone 4 rounder on the card
J’Leon Love, 6-0 (5), of Dearborn Heights, MI, will be in with
tough Lamar Harris, 6-7-3 (4), of St. Louis, MO, who in his only
other NJ fight had then Denis Douglin on the floor before losing by
one point. This should be an interesting undercard with a great
main event put on by DiBella Entertainment and Warriors Boxing!
