For Philadelphia’s USBA Middleweight champion Lajuan Simon, 22-2-2 (12), it is a road back after being in a title match and an eliminator in 2009. He is the #8 IBF contender and will meet a hungry southpaw in Jose Angel “Silver Boy” Rodriguez, 15-1-1 (2), out of New York, at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York on Saturday night.

One common opponent is Darnell Boone whom Simon drew with in 2006 and Rodriguez defeated in his last fight in January. Rodriguez has won three in a row since losing his only fight to George Walton in early 2009.

In talking with Simon he is in New York as of Friday with his trainers Wade and Randy Hinnant. He defended his USBA title in his last fight over 12 rounds in Las Vegas defeating Elvin Ayala last October. “I plan to do what I usually do. Put everything together. If a knockout comes it comes,” said Simon. In his two losses he was making weight just prior to the fights but in his last two he is right on the weight. His bout with Arthur Abraham in March of 2009 was a lot closer than the judges gave him credit for. His showing was good enough to merit an IBF International fight with Sebastian Sylvester with the judges more in line in a very close fight in spite of losing. Both fights were in Germany. The win earned Sylvester a vacant title fight of the IBF title and he has had two defenses since.

Both boxers are 31. Simon has been in the pro ranks since 2002 while Rodriguez has been there since 2005. The fight will be in the home state of Rodriguez but Simon has the experience going for him. This should be a good match-up.
