Champs Management will be debuting into the promotional business Friday (Today) at the Chase Center on the Riverfront, in Wilmington, DE, with a pair of NABA interim title bouts and 5 additional bouts. The planning has been in the works for some time and with the support of the mayor it should be a great show! Gates open at 6pm and first bout scheduled at 7pm.
Like most boxing shows there were hitches along the way and the biggest was when main event boxer Dennis Hasson, 15-0 (5), from the Kensington section of Philadelphia, who moved to DE over a year ago, injured his ribs in sparring and is being replaced by Norfolk, VA boxer Frankie “Freight Train” Filippone (right side in photo), 12-2-1 (2), who stole the undercard at Dover Downs recently. It wasn’t that long ago Hasson and Filippone were sparring at the Elsmere gym. He will be facing Kevin “Hit Man” Engel, 20-6 (16), of St. Louis, MO., who is returning after defeating previously unbeaten Anthony Caputo Smith at Dover in 2012. Matchmaker Nick Tiberi has brought in a solid replacement for Hasson. The southpaw Filippone is unbeaten in his last 7 fights (6-0-1). This is scheduled for 10 rounds in the light heavyweight division.
George Beer of Delaware Valley Development Company is one of 4 investors with CM said “we expect a sell out crowd Friday and have many sponsors supporting us”. Former IBC Super middle champ Dave “TNT” Tiberi who helped form the group behind Hasson whom he manages and has trained proclaimed “we are all disappointed Dennis is not on the show Friday but expect a good crowd knowing the Wilmington fans are big supporters of boxing”. The shows at Dover Downs Casino are proof of that starting the year off with a show in January. Tiberi’s company is Emergency Response Protocol while the other investors are John Sobieski, III of Sobieski Services, Frank Vasallo, IV of Fusco Enterprises and Kevin Wilson of Architectural Alliance.
Another CM boxer is the “New” Ray Robinson (left side in photo), 14-2 (6), from Philadelphia, a tall southpaw who had a very good amateur career. He will face Alberto Morales, 11-1-1 (8), a Nicaraguan now living in Miami, FL. Robinson has won his last 2 bouts and along with Morales will be making his DE debut. He is trained by Moses Robinson. This is scheduled for 10 rounds in the welterweight division.
Haitian Melissa “Little Miss Tyson” St. Vil, 3-1-2 (0), of Brooklyn, NY, takes on Natasha Spence, 6-0 (5), of Mississauga, Ontario, CAN, over 8 (2 min) rounds in the super featherweight division. Vil is managed by Brian Cohen. “Rockin” Ryan Belasco, 17-5-3 (3), of Wilmington, DE, is in a rematch with Bryne Green, 7-5-1 (3), of Vineland, NJ, who defeated Belasco in 2011 by split decision in PA.
Continuing the Tiberi name is Joey Tiberi, 7-1 (5), of Newark, DE, who is on a 5 fight win streak taking on Moses Molina, 1-2 (1), of Bridgeton, NJ, over 4 rounds in the lightweight division. He is the son of Joe “TNT” Tiberi. Wilmington’s Luis Hernandez, will be making his debut against Curtis Morton, 1-3-2 (0), of Harlem, NY, over 4 rounds in the light welterweight division. Lamont Singletary, 4-0 (2), of Dover, DE, was scheduled to fight Dan Biddle in a 4 round cruiserweight bout but Biddle fell out so an opponent is TBA.
