If you are like me, then you are hoping that negotiations between the teams of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao lead to a fight this time around. Have we not had the rug pulled from our feet enough already? I was hopeful over the last few weeks, but cracks are starting to show, and I am left wondering if this is the same old song and dance and once again no fight will materialize.
Here are a few of my concerns and opinions that makes me believe that cracks are showing up in this picture...
“Yesterday, I was lying. ... Today, I'm telling the truth” - Bob Arum (famous words from promoter Arum.)
So far, everything positive that we have heard about the negotiations has strictly come from Team Pacquiao. The silence from Mayweather's side is deafening. Pacquiao has stated that he feels an announcement for the fight will be made before the end of this month. This has to have you worried because no one from Mayweather's side has even remotely shown signs that this is the case.
"Top Rank and Manny have agreed to the terms on our side. I don't know about the other side." - Carl Moretti / Top Rank. (Quoted this week in the media).
Pacquiao side has stated that they have signed a deal and await Mayweather finalize it. Some of the information they released was the date of May 2nd and that the venue picked is the MGM Grand. That would all be great except a spokesman who represents MGM told Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports that there was no deal for the fight to be held on that date at the as far as he is aware.
Quoted by Yahoo Sports, Bob Arum stated: "The people we have talked to on Mayweather's side have agreed to everything. Now we need Mayweather to step up and say, 'Yeah, I'm on board. I agree.'
- Now that would be great, but again, this is second hand information - this is something that would hold more value if Mayweather's side had said that. Arum speaking on behalf of Team Mayweather doesn't sit right with me... sounds like more smoke and mirrors.
The bottom line here for me, all the talk is coming from Pacquiao's side. Such as it had been often in the past, Pacquiao's side claims a lot of good things, but previous negotiations all ended up being a waste of time. This time, once again it's Pacquiao's side doing most, if not all of the talking.... Haven't we been down this road before?
I'm hopeful like everyone else, but if past history has shown us anything... don't hold your breath. The cracks are showing.
