A March Preview with Predictions
Feb 15, 2004 By Rick Caldwell Photo © Brendon Pierpaoli The month of February looked like it was going to be a great month for boxing. Unfortunately, two injuries to two big names left us with a bout between Sharmba Mitchell, and Lovemore N’Dou. Not to take anything away from these guys, but it was a big let down. With the exception of a couple pretty good ESPN2 cards, and the fight on the 28th between Jesus Chavez and Erik Morales, the month of February served only to wet out palate’s going into the month of March. To say that March is going to be huge would be a severe understatement. We start out with a rematch between Joel Casamayor and Diego Corrales on the sixth. That’s going to be huge. Their first rematch was stopped early due to a really bad cut in Diego’s mouth that was rumored to be caused by his mouth guard. In case you missed it, the fight seemed to be going Joel’s way. He dropped Diego several times, only to get cracked, and dropped himself. It was one of those fights that seemed like it could end at any moment. I’m very eager to see the rematch on the sixth. Diego obviously has the power, but lacks a good chin. The question here is, can Diego catch Joel before his weak chin does him in? One week later, we have what just may one of the most interesting fight cards of the year. First, we have a unification bout at 154 between Sugar Shane Mosley, and Winky Wright. Winky has been avoided by many of the top stars in the division due to his awkward style, and it’s great that Sugar Shane had the guts to take the fight. To be honest, I’m surprised he did. There are many other fights at 154 that would have made him a ton of cash with probably less risk, and he took on one of the few guys who just might be able to beat him. That is the reason I love Shane Mosley. Winky deserves a shot, and he’s getting one on the 13th. The undercard has the unbeaten Baby Joe Mesi, fresh off a win against Monte Barrett, taking on the once beaten, former Cruiserweight Champ, Vassiliy Jirov. I love this fight. It is going to show us if Joe can handle a war. Jirov just keeps coming, and I’m sure he’ll make it very difficult for Mesi. Who ever wins this fight will be a huge part of the heavyweight division. On the 27th, my favorite heavyweight prospect, Dominick Guinn is taking on Monte Barrett. This is going to be a very tough fight for Barrett. Guinn is dominating just about everyone he fights, and is Barrett’s head right after his loss against Baby Joe? On the undercard, another hot prospect, Jermain Taylor takes on yet another tough guy, Alex Bunema. This will be another good test for the rising middleweight. Bunema has only 3 losses, but Taylor seems to get more and more impressive every time he fights. It shouldn’t be long before he’s knocking on Bernard Hopkin's door. Now that I’ve told you a bit about the fights, here are my predictions. I look for Diego Corrales to avenge his loss, and knockout Casamayor late in the fight. He got caught way too much in the first fight, and I think he’ll make subtle changes to his style, and avoid getting caught this time. On the 13th, I’m taking the underdog! Winky Wright is going to beat Sugar Shane. I think his awkward style, and the fact that I think he flat out wants it more is going to be too much for Shane. As far as Mesi vs. Jirov, this fight scares me. The reason it scares me, is because I said in a previous article that Baby Joe won’t get exposed this year. Because of that, I’m sticking with my pony in this one. On the 27th, I’m going with my two boys. Guinn and Taylor will look great, and win big. My official predictions are: Diego Corrales by KO in 7 Winky Wright by a split decision that will be debated for weeks Joe Mesi by KO in 9 Dominick Guinn by KO in 6 Jermain Taylor will dominate and score a UD.
