Katsidis wins Australian Junior Welterweight Title
Feb 23, 2004 By Anthony Cocks On Friday night former amateur standout Michael "Rocky" Katsidis won the vacant Australian Junior Welterweight Title with a near shutout over Kenyan born South Australian Fred Kinuthia at the Brisbane Broncos Leagues Club in Brisbane, Queensland. In a rematch of their December 2003 fight which Katsidis won by 5th round TKO, the local favorite showed his continued improvement by boxing his way to a definitive win by scores of 99-91 (Wally Lewis), 100-91 (Derek Milham) and 100-92 (Allan Moore). Former Australian welterweight and junior welterweight title holder Kinuthia, who in the past has made a habit of turning up to fights under-prepared, gave a good account of himself that wasn't reflected by the wide margins of the scores. The event was a sellout with over two hundred fans reportedly turned away at the door. On the undercard Peter Rolph beat Max Mariconte on points for the Queensland Middleweight Title over 8 rounds. At heavyweight Mark Demori scored a KO win over Barry Prior at 0:34 of the third frame. Supermiddleweight Jason Pearce won a four round points decision on debut against Ben Dyer, while welterweight Chris McCullen also won his debut on points over four rounds against Shane Winter.
