When looking at the boxing landscape you can expect to see a little bit of everything as far as fighters are concerned. The sport is full of former champions looking to get back their glory, top contenders itching for a title shot, and current champions looking to stay kings. The boxing world is a melting pot in its own right and every fighter stands out with his or her own unique characteristics. In Brooklyn native Sechew ‘Iron Horse’ Powell I see a rising contender who is both brash and humble and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the thick of things by the end of this year.

Powell will be putting his 18-0 (11) record on the line this Friday night when he meets former world title challenger Robert Frazier on ShoBox: The New Generation and is always the case, Powell isn’t short of confidence coming in. Powell is a southpaw stylist with solid boxing skills and the ability to mix it up on the inside when he has to. It will be his fourth appearance on Showtime in his last five fights and a win should lead to bigger things later this year.

Powell has been a longtime friend of Bragging Rights Corner and I was able to catch up with him for a quick minute to get his thoughts on facing Robert Frazier this Friday, his relationship with his promoter Lou DiBella, and his overall motivation for the sport…

Facing Robert Frazier this weekend…

‘I’m excited. It’s another shot on nation television. It’s a big deal to me and I’m just looking to make good on the opportunity.

Sizing up Robert Frazier…

‘I think Robert Frazier is an experienced fighter. He’s competed at the highest level of the division and I think he’s going to be the most experienced challenge that I’ve had so far.

Appreciating the opportunity…

‘I’m not worried about Frazier’s experience at all. I know it will be something that will be more beneficial to him, but I’m not worried about it and I’m still very confident. I know that in order to get to the top level of this division I’m going to have to go through guys like Robert Frazier. More than anything else I’m just appreciative of the opportunity.

Advantages...

"I think my biggest advantages are going to be my speed, my power, and my overall ability. I feel like I am a better boxer and fighter than Robert Frazier. I’m not as experienced but I feel that I am simply better overall. I think my edge will be that I’m just better than he is.

Training in the Poconos…
‘Training has been going really good. I’ve got all my partners up here and it’s been mostly a Brownsville training camp. I’ve had an excellent camp and I’m very happy with how it’s been. I’m in the Poconos and just recently it has become like a second home to me. In the future I might change things up and try training somewhere else but I am always going to look at the Poconos as one of my top options.

Goals…

‘The love of the fans keep me going. I’m starting to be a fighter than is in demand and that alone keeps me focused. I also have goals I want to accomplish. I’ve been boxing since I was ten years old and I won’t be satisfied until I get a world title. I also am looking to leave the sport with a sufficient amount of funds to start another life.

Knowing his promoter Lou DiBella…

‘I would have to say that Lou has helped my career tremendously in that he has given me the opportunity. He has given me the opportunities and the rest has been up to me. Now I’m in a great position and I wouldn’t be here without him. I was able to work out a good deal with Lou and we have a great working relationship.

February 3rd…

‘Just look out for a very explosive fight on February 3rd. I think it will be the best fight that I have fought to date and I’m looking to put on a great show. I’m in there with a very hard opponent and I think everyone can expect an extremely exciting fight. You don’t want to miss it.

The Sechew Powell-Robert Frazier fight will take place this Friday, February 3rd as the main event on Showtime’s ShoBox: The New Generation series. The telecast begins at 11 PM/ET.
