Fight Academy supremo Dennis Hobson was absolutely delighted to tell Doghouse Boxing that the London and Sheffield based Promotional Company had secured the signing of former Commonwealth Silver Medallist at middleweight Steven Birch.
Hobson views the signing as highly important, stating “This is yet more evidence Fight Academy are continuing to make significant strides as a promotional company. Why else would exciting fighters like Steven want to sign for us?”
Indeed on perusing Steven Birch’s achievements as an amateur they are highly impressive: NABC Champion at Light Welter in 1997, twice Junior ABA Champion at Welterweight in 1998 and 1999. Birch then went onto box as a senior amateur reaching the Final of the ABA’s in 2000. After that Birch won two silvers at Multi Nation tournaments whilst boxing for England. His amateur career reached its high point in 2002 when he won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. After having a year out of the sport in 2004, Birch has decided the time is now right to completely focus on a career as a professional boxer.
Further on in his conversation with Doghouse Boxing, Dennis Hobson stated “We have signed Steven because we are extremely confident we have signed a lad with massive potential and pedigree who will make waves in the British super middleweight rankings. In addition I firmly believe Steven’s transition from being an amateur boxer to the paid ranks will be as smooth as it can be.” Hobson continued: “Steven will be making his debut on the undercard of the Clinton Woods/Julio Gonzalez fight in September. I cannot stress enough how excited myself and Robert are concerning the future of Fight Academy. Steven is joining an already thriving and strong stable.”
Doghouse Boxing also caught up with Steven Birch and he was asked why he had joined Fight Academy. “They are a highly impressive promotional company, I am totally convinced I am making the right move. When I first spoke to Dennis Hobson and Richard Poxon I was struck how straight forward and honest they were. They do not feed you with ‘bull’, just plain straight forward English and that is how I like it”. After further questioning Birch stated “I am like a lot of boxers, I am determined to prove myself at domestic level first, once I have done that I will then move onto the European scene, after that who knows what my path will be!”
It is clear there is exciting and challenging times ahead for British boxing. Fight Academy seem to be at the very front of the queue in impressing fight fans with some exciting shows taking place in the coming weeks. First of all the much anticipated British cruiserweight title fight will be on 22nd July between Mark Hobson and David Haye, with an exciting undercard presently being put together. That show will then be followed by only a few weeks later with Clinton Woods defending his IBF world light heavyweight title at Sheffield Arena.
